my political analysis of the election on tuesday, since “Progressive Change Campaign Committee” sent me an email asking “thoughts?”…
In general, what are you thinking tonight?
I’m thinking it’s a shame that the Democrats didn’t capitalize on the majorities they had during for the short time they had them. I think this election is as much about people being nonplussed on the progress to end two failed wars; the failure to repeal “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell”; not closing the Guantanamo Bay Detention Camp; not providing Single-payer Health Care; and most recently the Democratic Congress shied away from the debate on the Bush tax cuts until after the election.
What do you think the progressive movement should do next? As in, immediately…
Special interests have too much influence in politics and most grievous example of this is the Supreme Court ruling on Corporate Personhood. Congress needs to pass laws to limit and audit corporate political contributions.
Do you think Pres. Obama and congressional Dems should fight harder for progressive policies or seek middle ground with Republicans? (Please elaborate.)
I believe attempting to seek middle ground with the Republicans is a large factor in the disappointing legislative session of the past two years. If there was a willing partner on the other side, I could favor working together, but there is not a willing partner on the other side and the record is clear on that point. Further, the Republicans were rewarded for their obstructionist position while Democrat enthusiasm waned as the expectation went from “Change We Can Believe In” to “It Was The Best We Could Do”…
