world series champions 2011.10.31

how about that world series!

the only thing worse than being down two runs and on your last strike (twice) – is listening to all the noise about how this at bat may be the last one for albert pujols in a cardinal uniform.

think i’m exaggerating? espn, couldn’t even control themselves seconds after the cardinals won the series (see the story in the lower right corner)

too soon to tell 2011.10.28

bottom of the ninth, the cardinals are down by two…

by the time you read this you will know if i’m celebrating or crying today…

snatch the football 2011.10.27

from the parent of a little boy in logan’s class…

our son told us he was afraid to talk with logan. we asked why and he said “it makes me feel like charlie brown when his cheeks are red”

ninth fiddle 2011.10.26

its been a slow week here on account of

  1. a production release at work
  2. a moonlighting project nearing successful completion
  3. vetting a tenant for our basement apartment
  4. preparing halloween costumes
  5. the world series
  6. gorgeous fall weather (who wants to be inside)
  7. the kid’s swim team
  8. some correspondence chess over at chess.com – want to to play?

and unless you’re one of those uneducated people who votes against your own personal interests, this represents a good solution

one million? 2011.10.19

when my pal barack obama sent me an email with the subject line “1 million” i was pretty certain the body was going to be an explanation of why i have received that many spam/donation requests from him…

alas, i was wrong, the beg count increases to one million and one.

redeeming 2011.10.18

keeping with a baseball theme and acknowledging the first and maybe only worthy item i’ve found in my inbox from my religiously inclined friends email chains – boy do they eat this stuff up!

this is baseball 2011.10.17

the last time a sporting event made me cry…

he’s going! the pitch is high, the throw is…safe! he stole it! the throw got by the shortstop and brock has done it! they would’ve thrown him out, but the shortstop couldn’t handle the bad throw and this is it, folks. brock has now stolen 893!

— jack buck calling lou brock’s career record breaking 893rd stolen base in 1977.

i’m sharing the national league championship series between milwaukee and st. louis with my kids and its fun sharing my love of cardinal’s baseball with them.

and while the game doesn’t bring tears to my eyes any more – remembering and missing jack buck nearly does…

is one too little? 2011.10.12

long before 2005 and steve jobs’ famous commencement address to stanford where he said -

“if today were the last day of my life, would i want to do what i am about to do today?” and whenever the answer has been ‘no’ for too many days in a row, i know i need to change something.”

- i applied a variant of this to how i ran my life.

but either because its been in the news so much since his death, or that i’m older now, i’m beginning to feel as if one counts as “too many days in a row”…

net flub-ix 2011.10.11

with the latest announcement from netflix i jumped on the off bandwagon and cancelled their service.

beyond the joy of punishing a vendor for crappy service was this excellent comment on their blog – well said bryan…

i would have “liked it” on facebook but i’m rewarding their crappy service by not visiting them either…

javaone 2011.10.10

of all presentations and all the slides at javaone, this was my favorite…
