The Cambodian genocide carried out by Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge killed between 1.5 to 3 million people between 1975 and 1979.

I learned while visiting Phnom Penh that the Khmer Rouge was driven from power in 1979 by the Vietnamese Army and Cambodia remained at war with Vietnam until 1991. Even thought the Khmer Rouge was not in power, it wasn't completely defeated until 1999.

This helps to explain why a taxi driver would respond "Good, no one is shooting at me today" when asked "How are you?"

We visited the killing field at Choeung Ek and S-21, the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and both are amazing memorials to the Cambodian Genocide.

Even as you stand looking at the evidence of what occurred, its near impossible to imagine that people are capable of such things.
