The forest and grounds around Hatley Castle are amazing, but as Natalie reminded me last night, they are so amazing that bear and cougar may be enjoying them as well.

The signs that warn you how to act if you encounter a bear or cougar are comical:

  • Maintain eye contact with the cougar, show your teeth and make loud noise.
  • Convince the cougar you are a threat and not prey.
  • Slowly back away, talking to the bear in a quiet, monotone voice. Do not scream, turn your back on the bear, kneel down or make direct eye contact.

Beside the fact I'll never remember which animal I'm supposed to make eye contact with or not, who exactly performed the controlled studies to determine which of these strategies was most effective?

Maybe we know what happened when someone survived an encounter with a cougar, because they are still alive to tell of it, but those who didn't can't exactly share with us what went sideways.
